China Urges North Korea to Halt Its Missile and Nuclear Tests

The Chinese Foreign Ministry stated that its foreign minister met with his North Korean counterpart and emphasized the need to stop Pyongyang's actions that violate UN Security Council resolutions, as the situation approaches a 'critical point.' The meeting between Wang Yi, China's foreign minister, and Ri Yong-ho, North Korea's foreign minister, took place on August 6 in Manila, during the East Asia Cooperation Council meeting. The Chinese Foreign Ministry described the statement as rare, indicating that the current situation on the Korean Peninsula is 'extremely complex' and that China-North Korea relations are 'affected by this issue.' From Beijing's perspective, 'the situation is approaching a critical point,' and 'now is the time for change, decision-making, and returning to the negotiating table.' China has urged its neighbor to refrain from actions that violate the demands and resolutions of the Security Council and has also asked the United States and South Korea not to escalate tensions. The UN Security Council has prohibited North Korea's ballistic missile tests and nuclear military tests. In the latest resolution passed without opposition from Moscow and Beijing, severe sanctions were imposed on Pyongyang. A White House spokesperson stated that the U.S. President praised the resolution for increasing sanctions and appreciated the cooperation of Russia and China in achieving it. However, China has previously criticized the deployment of the THAAD missile defense system in South Korea, which the U.S. claims is for defense against North Korean threats. Beijing itself is facing protests from the U.S. and some of its allies regarding military activities in the East and Southeast Asian waters. The Chinese Foreign Ministry stated that the North Korean foreign minister emphasized Pyongyang's position on nuclear issues during his meeting with Wang Yi and expressed a desire to continue communications with Beijing on this matter. Concurrently with the Chinese Foreign Ministry's statement, South Korea's state news agency reported that North Korea described Seoul's proposal for inter-Korean talks as 'lacking seriousness' and rejected it. Moon Jae-in, the President of South Korea, had proposed negotiations aimed at reducing tensions in the military demilitarized zone and family reunions separated since the 1950-1953 war last month. Kyodo News reported that senior diplomats from Japan, South Korea, and the U.S. have begun discussions aimed at 'applying maximum pressure' on North Korea to stop its missile and nuclear tests. Ri Yong-ho, who arrived in Manila on Sunday evening, has not yet responded directly to the imposed sanctions and the statements made. In this context, China has expressed opposition to the new U.S. sanctions against Iran, Russia, and North Korea. The Security Council unanimously imposed new sanctions against North Korea, and Trump welcomed the cooperation of Russia and China in passing these new sanctions. The Russian Foreign Minister stated that more interactions between Moscow and Washington are possible.
