China's Opposition to CIA's New Assessment on the Laboratory Origin of the Coronavirus

The CIA's assessment indicates that the coronavirus likely leaked from a laboratory. The Chinese government opposes this new evaluation. The recent CIA report was prepared during Joe Biden's administration and under the supervision of William Burns, the director of the agency in the previous administration, but was declassified on Saturday, January 26, at the order of John Ratcliffe, the new director of the agency. According to the new assessment, which is not based on new information or evidence, the coronavirus that led to a highly deadly pandemic in November 2019 'most likely' originated from a laboratory in China; however, the CIA has described its confidence in this conclusion as 'low.' On Monday, January 30, the Chinese Foreign Ministry rejected the 'claim' of a laboratory origin for the virus. A spokesperson for the ministry referenced the visit of a joint team from the World Health Organization and China to laboratories in Wuhan during the pandemic to support this response, but did not completely dismiss the hypothesis, describing it as 'very unlikely.' In March 2023, Christopher Wray, the director of the FBI, stated that investigations by the agency suggest that the likely origin of the coronavirus outbreak was the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China. At the same time, the Wall Street Journal reported that the U.S. Department of Energy reached the conclusion that the origin of the coronavirus pandemic was an accidental leak in China with 'low confidence.' A few months later, British media revealed investigations that identified three scientists from the Wuhan Institute of Virology as the 'patient zero' of the deadly coronavirus pandemic. The deadly coronavirus, after being discovered in November 2019 in Wuhan, sparked a pandemic that, according to the World Health Organization, infected over 772 million and claimed more than seven million lives by the beginning of last winter. On Saturday, the CIA issued a statement following the release of its assessment, indicating that researchers at the agency still consider both laboratory leak and natural origin scenarios for the start of the coronavirus pandemic as 'plausible.' However, experts state that until China shares its findings and evidence regarding the onset of this pandemic with the world, it cannot be definitively determined what the origin of COVID-19 is, something that China has so far resisted and has labeled the search for the origin of the coronavirus as 'political.' Donald Trump, during his first presidency when COVID-19 became a pandemic, referred to the virus as the 'Chinese virus' for a long time. At the end of 2024, on the fifth anniversary of the onset of the deadly pandemic, the World Health Organization once again officially requested China to share its data and evidence on this matter with scientists worldwide, describing this as a 'moral and scientific duty.' In response to this organization's call for transparency and cooperation with other countries, the Chinese government claimed that it has shared all information with others and has hidden nothing.
