Christian Weber, Austrian Citizen Imprisoned in Iran, Released

Nasser Atabati, the Chief Justice of West Azerbaijan Province, stated on Tuesday, September 17, that an Austrian citizen, whom he claimed was imprisoned in this province for 'committing crimes,' has been released thanks to what he called the intervention of 'lenient and Islamic mercy institutions.' According to state media, Christian Weber, the Austrian national, was handed over to the Austrian ambassador, who was present at the office of the Chief Justice of West Azerbaijan Province, to facilitate his exit and transfer. This judicial official of the Islamic Republic did not comment on the nature of the crime or the reasons for Christian Weber's release. In this regard, Karl Nehammer, the Chancellor of Austria, expressed his happiness over Christian Weber's release in a brief post on the social media platform 'X,' stating that the joint efforts of his special envoy, the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and their embassy in Tehran were successful and led to Weber's release. Mr. Nehammer noted that the Austrian embassy in Tehran is working hard to ensure that Christian Weber can leave Iran as soon as possible and reunite with his family. The Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed in 2022 that one of its citizens had been detained in Iran for reasons 'unrelated to protests' following the death of Mahsa Amini while in custody of the morality police. Official news agencies in Iran reported on Tuesday, citing the Austrian ambassador, that arrangements for contact and visitation between this citizen and his family had been made. According to human rights organizations, the judiciary of the Islamic Republic has imprisoned dozens of foreign nationals on various charges of espionage or alleged crimes, with the aim of hostage-taking and political exploitation.
