Clashes Between Police and Protesters in Bahrain

According to reports, clashes have occurred between police and protesters in Bahrain during the sixth anniversary of the country's protests. A spokesperson for the United Nations has expressed concern about 'restrictions imposed on fundamental freedoms' in the country. On February 15, protesters took to the streets with slogans such as 'Revolution until victory' and 'Martyrs will not be forgotten.' In Manama, the capital of Bahrain, police fired tear gas and smoke grenades at the marchers and prevented them from heading towards the main gates of the city. Some protesters have shared images of the injured from the protests on social media. In 2011, protests and marches were held in opposition to the Bahraini government, which, with the intervention of police, security forces, and Saudi troops, ultimately had no impact on the leadership and governance of the country. Since then, security officials and police have arrested and prosecuted several protesters and activists. Bahrain has repeatedly accused Iran of interfering in its affairs and supporting some protesters as well as armed groups. Tehran has consistently denied these accusations. In the annual list published by the non-governmental organization Freedom House, both Bahrain and Iran are ranked at the bottom of the list alongside countries like Saudi Arabia and Syria, classified as 'unfree' in terms of political and civil rights as well as press freedom. Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the United Nations, called for government reforms in Bahrain on February 15 and expressed concern over 'restrictions imposed on fundamental freedoms, including the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression.'
