Clinton at Election Rally: Democracy is Not Just for Billionaires

Hillary Clinton, the leading Democratic candidate for the U.S. presidential election, promised to fight for a fairer society for ordinary Americans during her first public campaign rally. On June 13, she spoke to thousands gathered in New York, stating, "Democracy cannot just be for billionaires and corporations" and "prosperity cannot only belong to CEOs and hedge fund managers." According to Reuters, this leading Democratic candidate for the 2016 presidential election addressed issues that excite liberal Democrats. She expressed her support for issues such as same-sex marriage, women's rights, justice and equality in pay, clean energy, and reforming Wall Street. New York, the site of Clinton's first public rally, is where the 'Occupy Wall Street' movement began in 2011 in protest against the disarray in the economic and banking sectors, spreading to other cities and regions in the U.S. and around the world. Clinton, who appears to have no other Democratic candidate able to match her public appeal, was a rival to Barack Obama in the 2008 primary elections, which ultimately ended with Obama's victory and his nomination as the party's main candidate. After Obama's election in 2008, Clinton was appointed to the key position of Secretary of State. News agencies have estimated the crowd at the New York rally to be relatively large. Clinton's initial campaign phase began in April with her presence among families and small businesses, along with limited meetings with ordinary people. Additionally, her extensive use of social media and the release of her new memoir titled 'Hard Choices' have been among her activities in recent months.
