Clinton's Victory in the Primaries of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico

Hillary Clinton, the leading candidate in the Democratic Party's primary elections, has secured the majority of votes in Puerto Rico; she had previously outpaced her rival Bernie Sanders in the 'Party Assembly' in the Virgin Islands. CNN reported that after counting nearly 30% of the votes, Clinton won 62% against Sanders in Puerto Rico. Over the weekend in the U.S., on June 5 and 6, this marks Clinton's second victory in U.S. territories, which are directly overseen by the federal government and fall outside state governance. The United States has 16 territories. The former Secretary of State thanked the citizens of Puerto Rico on her Twitter page. The archipelago is currently grappling with a widespread crisis due to debt, and both Democratic candidates have specifically tailored their campaigns to address this issue and propose solutions. Puerto Rico has a total of 60 delegates, of which Hillary Clinton is expected to secure at least 31. By the end of the weekend, the number of representatives who voted for her in the primary elections reached 2,313 votes, slightly less than the 2,383 votes required for nomination. Citizens residing in U.S. territories participate in the primary elections of both major American parties, Democratic and Republican, and their delegates' votes are counted at the final party conventions, but they do not participate in the presidential election voting. In the coming days, Democratic primary elections will be held in New Jersey and then in the populous state of California. Bernie Sanders, Clinton's rival, has stated that he will continue to compete with her until the Democratic National Convention in July. Mr. Sanders expresses hope for changing the minds and securing votes from hundreds of 'super-delegates' (senior party officials who can vote for anyone they wish).
