CNN Report on Iranian-Linked Hackers' Operations Ahead of U.S. Presidential Elections

CNN reported on Wednesday, September 7, that Iranian-linked hackers have targeted the campaign of Donald Trump, the former President of the United States and Republican candidate in the upcoming elections, just ahead of the elections scheduled for November. CNN's exclusive report stated that these Iranian hackers had previously used a similar tactic two years ago to target a former government official and trusted ally of John Bolton, Trump's National Security Advisor and a prominent critic of the Iranian regime. According to CNN, after infiltrating this individual's email account, the hackers sent a seemingly harmless request to a group of U.S.-based experts critical of the Iranian regime, asking them to review a hypothetical book by this individual about Iran's nuclear programs and North Korea. In this fake email, purportedly sent by this individual, he requested the experts to provide feedback on the chapters of his forthcoming book after studying it. He encouraged the experts to click on an attached link to access a version of the book that did not actually exist. Upon clicking, malicious codes would enter the experts' accounts, allowing the hackers unlimited access to their computers and information. CNN reported that this individual soon realized what was happening and informed the FBI and his colleagues that he had been targeted in a 'very complex hacking operation.' Investigations by the news network indicate that these hackers were linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran. CNN's report delves into new details of the years-long operations of these Iranian hackers who have targeted former members of the Trump and Biden administrations. According to the news network, these hackers also targeted a senior former Biden administration diplomat in the Middle East in a similar manner last June through phishing emails. In April, he received a seemingly harmless email from someone claiming to be a researcher at a reputable think tank in Washington. This fake email asked him to participate in a discussion as an expert on Middle Eastern affairs regarding the think tank's research topic on 'the evolving dynamics of the Israel-Palestine situation.' CNN reported that it is unclear whether the hackers were successful in this operation, as this former diplomat has refrained from commenting on the matter. However, potential access to such an individual's email would provide valuable information to the hackers for future operations targeting Democratic Party foreign policy circles. According to the news network, the Iranian regime's relentless efforts to hack current and former U.S. officials have recently drawn the attention of U.S. intelligence agencies. Experts believe that Iran is attempting to exacerbate divisions in the United States as one of the most aggressive foreign powers ahead of the U.S. presidential elections. After Trump's campaign announced that their email systems had been hacked by hackers working for the Iranian regime, analysts and security experts warned on Sunday, August 21, that there might be broader efforts by foreign powers to disrupt the U.S. presidential elections. The White House has condemned any foreign attempts to interfere in U.S. elections and takes them very seriously. So far, Eric Swalwell and Adam Schiff, two Democratic members of the House of Representatives from California who have served on intelligence and security committees, have called for explanatory sessions and the declassification of information related to potential foreign interference in the elections. News organizations, including The Washington Post and Politico, reported that in recent weeks they have received documents titled 'special and confidential' from an anonymous user named 'Robert,' containing information about internal reviews concerning J.D. Vance, Trump's vice-presidential candidate. Trump's campaign referenced a report released by Microsoft on Friday, August 19, which revealed evidence of Iranian hackers' attempts to breach the email account of a 'high-ranking official' in U.S. election campaigns last June. The company did not provide further details, but a source familiar with Microsoft's work confirmed that the report referred to Trump's campaign. It was around the same time that J.D. Vance was introduced as Trump's running mate if he wins the upcoming elections. Additionally, OpenAI announced that they had discovered and disrupted a campaign by the Iranian regime to spread false information aimed at influencing the U.S. elections. However, U.S. officials have not confirmed the hacking of this campaign, and Trump's campaign has not provided evidence of Iranian involvement. According to The Washington Post, the Harris-Walz campaign has also not responded to several requests for comment. The Democratic Party and affiliated organizations have emphasized the need for advanced security protocols since 2016, investing heavily to strengthen and protect systems against hacking and other cybersecurity threats. Donald Trump wrote on his social media account, Truth Social, 'Microsoft just informed us that the Iranian government hacked one of our many websites - this is never a good thing!' Microsoft and other security companies say that an Iranian group operated by the IRGC was involved in this attack. According to the email security provider Proofpoint, the Iranian hacker group used the same method against a spokesperson for a U.S. official in 2021, and this group has a custom malware that can be used for more subtle attacks. Joshua Miller, a researcher at Proofpoint, stated that this Iranian group actively targets politicians and campaign staff, and several Iranian groups pose as journalists to approach their targets. A National Security Council spokesperson said on Saturday that the Biden administration 'strongly condemns any foreign government or entity attempting to interfere in our electoral process or undermine trust in our democratic institutions.'
