CNN Reports from an Israeli Source: Sinwar Seeks Ceasefire

The American network CNN, citing 'an Israeli source' familiar with the Gaza ceasefire negotiations, reported that Egyptian and Qatari mediators have claimed in a message to Israeli officials that Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas, is seeking a ceasefire agreement to end the war in Gaza. However, this source, which CNN did not identify, states that no one knows what Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, wants. Two Israeli sources say that Netanyahu's allies have told reporters and other government officials that the Prime Minister is ready to agree without considering the consequences for his coalition government. According to CNN, however, the Israeli security establishment is skeptical about Netanyahu's willingness to agree with Hamas, given the strong opposition from the far-right ministers in his coalition to a ceasefire agreement. Following the death of Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of Hamas in Tehran, Yahya Sinwar was introduced as the new leader of the group. Israel has stated that it seeks to kill Hamas leaders following the terrorist attack by the group on southern Israel on October 7. The ongoing war began after that attack by the Palestinian terrorist groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad. Israel had previously promised to destroy Hamas's organizational and military capabilities in the Gaza Strip so that it would no longer pose a threat to Israel. According to CNN, American officials have told their Israeli counterparts that a swift agreement is necessary to prevent a regional war. CNN's report has also been reflected in Israeli media. Israeli fighter jets attacked several Hezbollah buildings in southern Lebanon. Five Iranian-affiliated militants were killed in a drone strike in Syria. Tensions in the Middle East have led several foreign airlines to cancel flights to Tel Aviv. Ongoing clashes in Gaza have prompted the Israeli army to issue evacuation orders for parts of Khan Younis.
