CNN: The U.S. Seized Nicolás Maduro's Private Jet Due to Sanctions Violations

CNN reported, citing two U.S. officials, that the United States has seized the private jet of Nicolás Maduro, the President of Venezuela, after determining that its purchase violated U.S. sanctions. According to the report, the aircraft was transferred to Florida on Monday. The seizure of the plane in the Dominican Republic indicates an escalation of tensions and the U.S. response to corruption within Maduro's government. The seized aircraft is equivalent to 'Air Force One,' the primary aircraft of the U.S. Air Force used for transporting the President of the United States, and has been used for Maduro's travels around the world. One of the officials mentioned in an interview with CNN that the seizure of a president's aircraft from another country is unprecedented, stating, 'We are sending a clear message that no one is above the law, and no one is beyond the reach of U.S. sanctions.' In this context, Merrick Garland, the U.S. Attorney General, stated that the Department of Justice has seized the aircraft, which was illegally purchased for $13 million through a shell company and smuggled out of the U.S. for Maduro and his associates. According to the statement, the aircraft was purchased through a company in Florida and was transferred to Venezuela via the Caribbean in April 2023. The Justice Department's statement adds that nearly all flights of this 'Dassault Falcon 900' aircraft have been to a military base in Venezuela and have been used for Maduro's international travels. CNN reported that the Department of Homeland Security's investigative agency, Commerce Department officials, the Office of Industry and Security, and the Department of Justice participated in the operation that led to the seizure and return of this aircraft to the U.S. In recent months, the U.S. has imposed sanctions on Venezuela's oil and gas sector due to the government's refusal to hold 'competitive and inclusive elections.' Another U.S. official told CNN that while many in Venezuela cannot afford a loaf of bread, Maduro is using a luxurious and expensive private jet. The dire economic conditions, food shortages, and limited access to healthcare have led over 7.7 million Venezuelans to leave their country, marking the largest displacement of people in the Western Hemisphere. Power outages and repeated blackouts in Venezuela; the Maduro government accused opponents of 'sabotage.' The Venezuelan Supreme Court ruled in favor of Nicolás Maduro in the recent presidential election dispute. Venezuela has filtered the 'X' network for 10 days.
