Commander of Ukrainian Ground Forces: The Situation of the War in the Northeast Has Deteriorated

On Saturday, October 14, the commander of the Ukrainian Ground Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, stated that the war along the northern section of the eastern front of Ukraine has "significantly worsened" in recent days. In remarks published by an official military platform, he stated, "The main goal of the enemy is to defeat a group of our forces, encircle Kupiansk, and reach the Oskil River." Syrskyi added that Russian forces conduct "dozens" of attacks every day, but Ukrainian forces are prepared and maintaining their positions. This development comes as Russian forces are attacking the strategic city of Avdiivka in another part of the eastern front in Ukraine, which, according to Russian and Western officials, has led to a new offensive. Ukraine's four-month counteroffensive in the east near Bakhmut and in the south—where Ukraine hopes to reach the Sea of Azov—has seen progress, but these gains have been gradual. The U.S. condemned the shipment of "arms from North Korea to Russia." Results from a bipartisan commission report: the U.S. must prepare for simultaneous wars with China and Russia.
