Concerns in France Following 'Deliberate Accident' of Vehicle with Pedestrians

On Monday at a Christmas market in France, an individual described by officials as having 'lost balance' drove a vehicle into pedestrians, resulting in 10 injuries. Four individuals are in critical condition, with one in a life-threatening state. This incident occurred one day after a similar event and two days after a knife attack on police officers, in which the attackers had shouted 'Allahu Akbar.' Although officials state that the driver was unbalanced and there is no evidence to suggest that Monday's incident was 'terroristic,' French media have reported concerns about the potential for these actions to become a pattern. The incident on Monday, November 1, took place in the evening when people were gathered for Christmas shopping at a market in the city of 'Nantes.' AFP reports that citizens of the country are worried about similar events occurring over two days and the knife attack. Nevertheless, the French Minister of the Interior stated that the attacker in Nantes was unbalanced and did not target pedestrians for religious or political reasons. Last Saturday, a 20-year-old man who had recently converted to Islam attacked police officers in 'Jouletour' while shouting 'Allahu Akbar,' and was shot dead by police. The day after, a driver who also shouted 'Allahu Akbar' attacked pedestrians in Dijon, injuring 13 people. The attacker in Nantes on Monday, after what officials described as a 'deliberate' accident, inflicted self-harm with a knife. AFP cites a source familiar with the investigation stating that the Nantes attacker was known to police, having a record of theft, property damage, and damage to a vehicle. Regarding the attack on Sunday, where the attacker shouted 'Allahu Akbar,' reports indicate that the assailant had mental health issues, having visited a psychiatric hospital 157 times, and had no connections to jihadist groups. The attacker in Dijon told police investigators that while driving, he suddenly 'felt compassion for Chechen children' and then crashed his vehicle into pedestrians.
