Concerns Over the Spread of California Wildfires with Strong Winds

The California wildfire, considered the largest in the state's history, may expand significantly due to intensified regional winds. According to Reuters, the recent fire named 'Thomas' spread dramatically on Wednesday night, with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection reporting that the flames have engulfed an area of 89 hectares. The extent of this wildfire is larger than a similar fire in 2007 in the Santa Barbara area, known as 'Zaca.' The 'Thomas' fire has also affected parts of Ventura County neighboring Santa Barbara. The California Fire Department stated on Monday morning that about 30% of the wildfire's area is under control, which shows no change compared to Wednesday's situation. According to officials, this wildfire, which started last week, has so far destroyed over 700 homes. The California Fire Department noted on Wednesday evening that approximately 18,000 homes and buildings are at risk, stating, 'Firefighters will continue their efforts to protect homes and buildings and will be looking for points from which the fire can be controlled.' Based on forecasts from the U.S. Weather Service for southern California areas on Thursday, 'weather conditions suitable for the continuation and expansion of the wildfire will persist.' According to this forecast, wind speeds in the region may reach about 90 kilometers per hour. Many schools in the Santa Barbara area are closed and will not resume until the end of the winter holidays in early January. Officials stated that the fires in other parts of California, including San Diego and Los Angeles, have been brought under control in recent days. In this context, the area of the California wildfire is larger than the combined areas of New York City and Boston.
