Concerns Over Zeynab Jalalian's Health in Yazd Prison; This Political Prisoner is Deprived of Medical Care

The news agency of the Human Rights Activists in Iran has expressed concern over the health condition of Zeynab Jalalian, a political prisoner who is spending the sixteenth year of her life sentence in Yazd prison, and has warned about her deprivation of medical care despite multiple health issues. On Tuesday, December 25, it was reported that Ms. Jalalian suffers from a pterygium eye disease, and due to the progression of this disease, her vision has severely diminished. Furthermore, despite having multiple other medical issues, including kidney and gastrointestinal diseases, she has been denied transfer to a hospital and access to specialized medical care by the relevant authorities, putting her at risk of blindness. This human rights organization further stated, 'Zeynab Jalalian's condition raises serious concerns about her health and future, and not only indicates a violation of the human rights of this political prisoner but also reveals the alarming situation of other political prisoners in Iran.' Zeynab Jalalian, originally from Maku, was arrested in 2007 and in 2009 was sentenced to one year in prison for illegal exit from the country and to death for 'moharebeh' (waging war against God) due to her membership in opposition groups (PJAK). Her death sentence was confirmed by the appeals court and the Supreme Court but was later commuted to life imprisonment. Ms. Jalalian has stated that during her detention, she was subjected to torture methods such as flogging on the soles of her feet, punches to the stomach, head-banging against the wall, and threats of rape. According to the Hengaw Human Rights Organization, 41-year-old Zeynab Jalalian, recognized as the longest-serving female political prisoner in Iran, has been deprived of leave for the past 16 years and, in addition to 'psychological and physical torture,' has had no family visits since 2020. The United States has repeatedly condemned the ongoing and systematic violations of the rights of prisoners and citizens in Iran by the Islamic Republic government. International human rights bodies, including United Nations rapporteurs, have consistently urged Iranian authorities to end this trend.
