Concerns Raised by Grossi Over Potential Attack on Iran's Nuclear Facilities Amid Suspension of Agency Inspectors

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced on Monday the temporary suspension of inspections at Iran's nuclear facilities due to concerns over a potential retaliatory attack by Israel. Rafael Grossi stated that Iran had closed its nuclear facilities on Sunday citing 'security considerations,' but they reopened on Monday. However, Grossi indicated that inspectors would remain away from the site until the situation is 'completely calm.' He reassured that inspections would resume on Tuesday and that this would not affect their inspection activities. In response to a question about the likelihood of an Israeli attack on Iran's nuclear facilities, Grossi expressed ongoing concern regarding this possibility and urged both sides to exercise maximum restraint. Previously, Grossi had mentioned that Iran is increasing its nuclear capabilities and that the inspections conducted by the IAEA, despite being active, are insufficient. In an interview with PBS, he emphasized that Iran's trend is towards maximum enrichment, although he noted that Iran's nuclear program has become very complex with various aspects. The European Union has called on Iran to 'de-escalate' rather than 'escalate' tensions in the region. Grossi has discussed Iran's nuclear program with Putin. The U.S. has warned Iran about ongoing 'obstruction' to cooperation with the IAEA. The European Troika has warned Iran to stop 'unauthorized' enrichment, and the U.S. insists that Iran must 'dilute' all of its 60% enriched uranium.
