Concert Canceled in Netherlands for Security Reasons; Driver of Vehicle with Gas Cylinders Arrested

A music concert in Rotterdam, Netherlands, has been canceled for security reasons. Dutch police arrested a Spanish citizen near the concert venue who was driving a vehicle carrying gas cylinders. Reuters reports that the arrest occurred after Spanish law enforcement provided information to their Dutch counterparts. However, a Spanish judicial official stated that there is no connection between the arrested individual and recent attacks in Spain. Last Thursday, an attacker in Barcelona's Las Ramblas boulevard killed 13 people by driving a vehicle into a crowd. Eight hours later, a similar deadly attack occurred in the coastal city of Cambrils, where police shot dead five attackers, some of whom were wearing fake explosive vests. Spanish security forces announced on August 20 that they had discovered 120 gas cylinders in a bomb-making workshop linked to the attackers. They stated that a day before the Thursday attacks, the bomb-making workshop exploded due to an incident, prompting the attackers to carry out their operation using a vehicle instead of bombs. Reuters now cites a Spanish judicial official stating that the ongoing investigation by the Civil Guard led to the arrest of the vehicle driver in Rotterdam. On the same Wednesday when the vehicle was stopped, a concert by an American rock band was canceled shortly before it was set to begin for security reasons. Ahmed Aboutaleb, the mayor of Rotterdam, told reporters that it is still unclear whether there is a direct relationship between reports of a potential attack threat against the music concert and the arrest of the vehicle driver. Mr. Aboutaleb urged caution against 'immediate conclusions' regarding the incident. He also confirmed that the vehicle had a Spanish license plate and had drawn attention after circling the concert venue. The identity of the driver, who is currently being interrogated, remains unknown. Bomb disposal special forces have also been sent to the concert venue. The Spanish news agency Europa Press reported, citing anti-terrorism officials, that the arrested Spanish citizen in the Netherlands has no ties to jihadist groups and that the gas cylinders were for domestic use. According to Dutch police reports, no one was harmed during the events. The terrorism alert level in the Netherlands has been at a 'significant' level since 2013 and has not changed at this time.
