Condoleezza Rice's Presence in Court Regarding Iran-Related Information Disclosure

Condoleezza Rice, former National Security Advisor and Secretary of State of the United States, appeared as a witness in the investigation of the case concerning the disclosure of classified information by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). This classified information pertains to the U.S. operational program against Iran's nuclear activities. According to a report on Friday, January 26, by the Associated Press, during the investigation of Jeffrey Sterling, a former CIA officer accused of leaking classified information, Ms. Rice expressed her surprise at how the CIA's covert operations were disclosed. This case is part of the investigation into claims made by James Risen, a New York Times journalist, who stated in his book that an operation named 'Merlin' was underway within the CIA to divert Iran's nuclear program. According to a report published by the Huffington Post and stated by Risen, the Merlin program aimed to provide Iran with flawed and incorrect blueprints for building a nuclear bomb. During the investigation, William Harlow, the CIA's public relations officer, also testified and mentioned that in April 2003, he received a phone call from Risen asking about the Merlin project. Harlow stated during his testimony that he did not confirm the existence of this project and later tried to dissuade Risen from preparing this report. Nearly four weeks after Risen's phone call with the CIA's public relations officer, George Tenet, then CIA Director, spoke with Jill Abramson, the then-editor of the New York Times, and James Risen, ultimately leading the New York Times to agree not to publish a report on the Merlin operation. However, James Risen published his book in 2006, dedicating a chapter to the Merlin operation. Since then, a case regarding the potential leak of classified information has been ongoing, and Risen has been pressured to reveal his source of information. Jeffrey Sterling faces ten charges. He has previously complained about a 'discriminatory' work environment and the 'difference' between 'black and white' within the CIA. Jeffrey Sterling is an African American. This case was removed from the judicial agenda due to the 'threat of potential leakage of classified information.' Jeffrey Sterling claims he has been treated 'unfairly' due to that complaint, and the charge of 'leaking classified information' is also related to that complaint. According to the Associated Press, Ms. Rice's testimony highlighted the importance of the case but did not implicate Jeffrey Sterling. James Risen, in his book, referred to some of the CIA's intelligence programs and stated that the lack of oversight over this agency has led to occurrences similar to the economic market crash of 2008 happening within the intelligence system as well. The Associated Press reported that the investigation session with witnesses will continue until the end of January and for another two weeks.
