Conference on 'Iran's Influence in Sweden' Held to Examine Activities of the Islamic Republic

The conference titled 'Iran's Influence in Sweden' was co-hosted by two members of the Swedish Parliament, Alireza Akhundi and Magnus Brantström, on Tuesday morning, May 18, to examine the activities of the Islamic Republic. This meeting was organized in collaboration with the Organization for the Fight Against Nuclear Iran and included representatives from the 'Center' and 'Christian Democrat' parties to discuss the Iranian government's activities in Sweden and their impact on both internal and external security in Europe. Alireza Akhundi, an Iranian-born member of the Swedish Parliament and one of the key speakers at the event, emphasized the necessity of placing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on the European Union's terrorist list. He stated, 'This necessity has never been felt as strongly as it is now. This is an important step to counter Iran's destructive activities in Europe.' The role of the Islamic Republic in the Ukraine war was a particular focus for attendees. David Lega, a Swedish representative in the European Parliament, stated in an interview with Voice of America, 'Iran has played a direct role in escalating tensions in Ukraine by selling weapons to Russia.' He added, 'This behavior not only indicates Iran's threat as a regional actor but also shows that Iran poses a serious threat to global security.' Reports and analyses presented at the meeting highlighted the role of Swedish universities and research centers in transferring technical knowledge to the Islamic Republic and its military applications, especially by the IRGC. According to the newspaper 'Expressen', the IRGC has extensive access to international collaborations and academic research in Iran, which is a cause for concern. The Islamic Republic's efforts to expand its influence internationally through European universities and research centers were discussed, emphasizing the importance of adopting new approaches to counter these security challenges. The representatives present at the meeting, held in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, stressed the importance of utilizing all available tools to prevent the Islamic Republic from exploiting Western educational and research networks. The Organization for the Fight Against Nuclear Iran warned about the IRGC's misuse of Swedish universities. A letter from 15 former hostages of the Islamic Republic to the Swedish Prime Minister urged serious action for the release of Ahmadreza Jalali. Samaneh Taherpour, an Iranian designer residing in Sweden, was threatened by Iranian security agencies. The five-year prison sentence of Saeed Azizi, a dual Iranian-Swedish citizen, was upheld in an appeals court. The Swedish Supreme Court reaffirmed the life sentence of Hamid Noury; Iraj Mesdaghi stated it was a victory for the plaintiffs. Exclusively, a Swedish-Israeli citizen was the target of a failed assassination plot: the Iranian embassy is the 'director' of the assassination operation.
