Confirmation of American Citizen's Death in Israeli Airstrike on Lebanon; U.S. Reaction

The U.S. State Department confirmed that an American citizen lost their life this week during an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon. The department stated it is investigating the circumstances and details of the incident. Kamil Ahmad Jawad, a resident of Dearborn, Michigan, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon on Tuesday. According to his daughter, a friend, and his congressional representative, he was a victim of this attack. Initially, the U.S. State Department believed he was merely a lawful permanent resident (green card holder) in the United States, but on Friday, the department confirmed he was an American citizen. A State Department spokesperson said, 'We are aware of and deeply concerned about reports of Kamil Jawad's death. We have confirmed that he is an American citizen.' He added, 'As we have emphasized repeatedly, Israel must do everything possible to prevent civilian casualties. Any loss of civilian life is a tragedy.' Israel has stated that the targets of these attacks are Hezbollah forces supported by the Islamic Republic, which have been firing rockets at Israel since the onset of the war in Gaza. According to the Lebanese government, recent Israeli attacks have resulted in the deaths of hundreds and injuries to thousands, but it remains unclear how many of the victims are civilians and how many are Hezbollah members. Additionally, over 1.2 million people in Lebanon have been forced to leave their homes.
