Conflicting Reports on the Situation in Bakhmut

Russia and Ukraine provided conflicting reports on the situation in the city of Bakhmut on Sunday. According to Reuters, Kyiv stated that it still controls a small part of the besieged city in eastern Ukraine. However, Moscow congratulated the Wagner mercenary group and Russian soldiers for what it called the 'liberation' of Bakhmut. The Associated Press also quoted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who stated that Russian forces have not occupied Bakhmut, casting doubt on Moscow's claims of the city's fall. Mr. Zelensky, who is visiting Japan, told reporters on the sidelines of the G7 summit, 'Bakhmut has not yet fallen to Russian occupation.' He noted that he is fully aware of what is happening in Bakhmut, adding, 'I cannot share the technical details of what is happening with you.' The Ukrainian General Staff also stated on Sunday evening, 'The battle in the city of Bakhmut continues.' The intensity of the fighting in the city has made independent verification of the situation impossible, and the conflicting statements from Ukrainian and Russian officials have caused confusion. On Saturday, Volodymyr Zelensky made remarks in English regarding the situation in Bakhmut that suggested he believed the city was under Russian occupation. When asked if the city was in Ukrainian hands, he said, 'I think not, but you must understand that there is nothing there. They have destroyed everything. There are no buildings left. It is a pity. This is a tragedy.' The Ukrainian President added, 'Today Bakhmut exists only in our hearts. There is nothing in this place; just land and a lot of dead Russians.' However, a spokesperson for Volodymyr Zelensky later walked back these comments. Ukrainian defense and military officials also stated that fierce fighting for control of Bakhmut continues, with the Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine even saying that Ukrainian forces have put the city in a 'semi-siege.' Biden unveiled a new $375 million military aid package from the U.S. to Ukraine. Russia's claim of complete control over Bakhmut has been denied by Ukraine. Zelensky noted that some Arab leaders have ignored Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Russia warned the West about sending F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine.
