The deadly terrorist attack by Hamas on Israel has heightened concerns about the potential for terrorist attacks in the United States; however, according to American officials, such a possibility has not yet become a real threat. According to Voice of America, in recent days, focus on such a potential threat has increased following the release of a report by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). This agency warns that individuals associated with Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, or Hezbollah may attempt to enter the United States through the southern border. Washington has designated all three groups as foreign terrorist organizations. Based on this report, first published by the Daily Caller, 'individuals inspired by the current conflict between Israel and Hamas may enter or exit the U.S. via circuitous transit routes at the southwestern border.' This document, prepared by the CBP field office in San Diego, California, warns that foreign fighters with ideological motivations or mercenaries from Middle Eastern countries may attempt to enter or exit the U.S. through Mexico. The agency further provides indicators related to each of the groups that could help identify a foreign fighter. CBP declined to confirm the accuracy of this report but downplayed the threat in a statement to Voice of America. A spokesperson for the agency said, 'CBP has not observed any signs of foreign fighters affiliated with Hamas seeking to enter the U.S.' The spokesperson also noted that CBP 'provides a broad context for frontline forces to be aware of their surroundings to ensure they remain vigilant in carrying out their missions to secure the nation and its borders.' According to this spokesperson, 'describing the situation and raising awareness are not threat assessments.' Concerns that a Hamas terrorist attack and Israel's military response could spill onto the streets of the U.S. heightened earlier this month when a former Hamas leader called for a 'Day of Rage.' He urged Muslims to 'join the battle' in support of this Palestinian group's fight against Israel and to send their 'message of rage' to the world. Following this call, police departments in New York, Los Angeles, and Washington heightened security measures as a precaution. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security also asked about four thousand law enforcement agencies across the country to conduct additional measures while assessing security conditions. Despite these concerns, a Homeland Security official at the time stated that the department 'currently has no specific information indicating any potential threat to the country.' This security official emphasized that if credible information is received, necessary actions will be taken to adapt to the situation and implement required measures. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has repeatedly warned that the greatest domestic threat currently is not foreign, and the department is concerned about attacks by lone criminals or small groups that occur with little warning.
