The parents of Mahsa Amini, the young woman whose death in the custody of the morality police sparked widespread protests across Iran, congratulated the occasion of Nowruz, the ancient Iranian festival and the new solar year, in separate messages to 'each and every noble citizen of Iran.' Mojgan Ekhtari, Mahsa's mother, began her Instagram story on Tuesday, March 19, with the phrase 'In memory and name of my radiant Mahsa, the late Zhina,' and expressed her hopes for happiness, victory, and courage for the people. She questioned, 'What is our share of the world? What did we want from the world of life?' She wished for joy for children, referring to the 'humiliation of parents with the sorrow of bread,' and expressed hope that 'inequality would forever vanish from the world' and that 'the holiday would be a shared feast for all my people,' as it represents 'the endless glory of my holiday, Nowruz, and spring.' Mojgan Ekhtari stated, 'I hope this year's Nowruz heralds happiness, victory, courage for dignity, and liberation from all forms of servitude.' Additionally, Amjad Amini, Mahsa's father, emphasized in his message that 'the greenery and vitality of nature in the new year is the result of liberation from the tyranny of winter and the arrival of the Nowruz breeze.' This seeking father stated, 'In these final hours and moments of the year, although we, the family of Zhina and all Zhinas, are still grieving and worried about our withered flowers, we still congratulate and extend our best wishes for the new year to each and every noble citizen of Iran.' He added, 'We hope and pray that in the new year, no one's garden of life suffers from leaf fall and destruction like ours, and that no dear one's place remains empty at the Haft-Seen table of families.' Concurrently with the Nowruz messages from the seeking families and political prisoners in Iran, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also congratulated Nowruz, wishing for 'peace, health, and happiness.'
