Congratulations from the Women's Cultural Center to All Freedom-Lovers in Iran - 2003-10-14 In honor of the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to our brave and dear comrade Shirin Ebadi, the Women's Cultural Center, representing a segment of freedom-loving women and human rights defenders in Iran, congratulates one of the feminist fighters and courageous defenders of women's and children's rights, Shirin Ebadi, on receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. This significant historical event is evaluated as a decisive step in the elevation of the women's rights movement in Iran. Shirin Ebadi, a lawyer, writer, researcher, and social activist, was born on June 21, 1947, and in 1978 won the Human Rights Watch Award. Before the revolution, in 1968, she became the first female judge in Iran, but after the revolution, like many other women, she was removed from her judicial position. She is one of the founders of the Children's Rights Association in Iran. In the years following the revolution, she has courageously taken on the defense of dozens of important political cases in our country. In her fight for women's rights and the implementation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, she was imprisoned two years ago. Ebadi has also played a significant role in raising women's awareness of their rightful rights through her written works and numerous speeches, alongside her fellow activists like Mehrangiz Kar. With this major victory and the acquisition of this prestigious international honor, Shirin Ebadi becomes the second Iranian feminist and activist, after Mehrangiz Monajerian, to receive the highest human rights award in the world. The Women's Cultural Center congratulates her on this victory and considers itself indebted to her courageous activities.
