Congress Building Incident; 'Police Injured Armed Individual'

A police official in Washington says that the armed individual who was shot by a police officer in the visitor section of the U.S. Congress is undergoing surgery. According to CNN, Matthew Verderosa, the chief of the Capitol Police, stated that the suspect entered through the north door at 2:30 PM and aimed his weapon at an officer present during the security screening, which uses security devices like metal detectors. At that moment, a police officer present at the screening shot him. He said the suspect is currently undergoing surgery, and his condition is still unclear. A firearm has been recovered from the scene of the incident. Reports indicate that following the shooting in the visitor section of the U.S. Congress, the doors of the Capitol building were closed, and attendees were instructed to take shelter for their safety. However, Matthew Verderosa stated that at 3:45 PM, the doors of Congress reopened except for the area where the suspect was shot. The police official added that the armed individual's vehicle was also found near the Capitol. He also mentioned that a woman was superficially injured during the shooting. Earlier reports indicated that following this incident, the area around the White House was also closed off. Meanwhile, two police officials told CNN that the suspect is named Larry Russell Dawson, a 66-year-old from Tennessee, who is well-known to the police due to his past records. According to CNN, last year, Larry Russell disrupted a House of Representatives session, claiming to be a 'prophet.' This incident occurred while the U.S. Senate was on recess for the Easter holiday on Monday, and members of the House of Representatives were in their districts. However, according to AFP, Washington has been filled with tourists during these days. The Associated Press reported that the Washington police announced on Twitter that this incident was 'an isolated event and there is no active threat in the city.'
