This announcement marks the end of his three-decade career in Congress, which included powerful committee leadership, drafting significant legislation, and two criminal trials on corruption charges. Among those who urged him to resign was Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York. Schumer stated in a release after the conclusion of Menendez's corruption trial and sentencing: 'In light of this conviction, Senator Menendez must now do what is in the best interest of his constituents, the Senate, and our country, and resign.' If Menendez resigns, Phil Murphy, the governor of New Jersey who was one of the first Democrats to call for Menendez's resignation, will appoint a senator to temporarily fill his seat until January 2025 when his term ends. Democratic Representative Andy Kim and Republican Curtis Sliwa are competing in the November general election for Menendez's Senate seat. According to prosecutors, an equivalent of $100,000 in gold bars and $480,000 in cash were found during the couple's home inspection.
