Consequences of the Attack on Israel; Europeans Consider Intensifying Sanctions Against the Islamic Republic

Leaders of the European Union member states will meet on Wednesday, April 17, to discuss intensifying sanctions against the Islamic Republic following its missile and drone attack on Israel. The leaders of the 27 EU member countries are gathering in Brussels as global powers strive to prevent the escalation of conflicts in the Middle East. This comes more than six months after the outbreak of war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which is supported by the Islamic Republic. Following Hamas's terrorist attack on October 7, which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people and the kidnapping of over 250 others, Israel launched an offensive against Gaza aimed at destroying this Islamist group backed by the Islamic Republic and freeing the hostages. Hamas officials have repeatedly stated that they will carry out similar attacks if capable. The United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Japan, Israel, and several other countries have listed Hamas as a terrorist organization. It remains unclear how Israel will respond to the Islamic Republic's attack on its territory, but EU leaders have called for Israeli officials to show restraint while considering intensified sanctions against Tehran. In a draft statement before the meeting, EU leaders announced their readiness for further restrictive measures against the Islamic Republic, particularly concerning its drone and missile programs. In a statement seen by Reuters, these leaders also condemned the Islamic Republic's attack 'unequivocally' and reaffirmed their commitment to Israel's security, urging all parties to prevent further escalation. Josep Borrell, the EU's chief diplomat, stated on Tuesday that the EU is preparing to intensify its sanctions against the Islamic Republic. He added that several EU members proposed that increased sanctions could disrupt the Islamic Republic's drone shipments to Russia and weapon supplies to its proxy groups in the Middle East. Some EU countries also suggested sanctions against the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). However, Borrell reiterated the EU's position, stating that the IRGC would only be designated as a terrorist group if a national official of the EU determines that the entity has participated in terrorist activities. The United States and other Western countries hope that new economic sanctions against the Islamic Republic will help persuade Israel to limit its retaliatory actions against Tehran. However, some analysts suggest that the Islamic Republic is unlikely to face serious sanctions from the U.S. due to concerns about rising global crude oil prices and potential anger from China, a buyer of its oil. The Islamic Republic views its attack on Israel on Saturday as a response to Israel's attack on its embassy in Damascus, the capital of Syria.
