Consequences of Trump's Interest in Greenland; Denmark Abandons Controversial Law

Denmark announced that it will abandon the controversial "competency test" for Greenlandic parents. This law, which is applied to minorities under Danish control, including the Inuit of Greenland, involves psychological tests that often lead to the separation of children from their parents. The Danish government's new decision comes amid rising tensions between Copenhagen and Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, following comments by U.S. President Donald Trump about the necessity of Greenland joining the United States. Opponents have long warned about the discriminatory effects of these psychological tests used in the government’s child welfare program. Human rights organizations have consistently criticized this program for being "incompatible with Greenlandic culture and other minorities under Danish control." The Danish Institute for Human Rights warned in 2022 that psychological tests were designed without considering the differences and cultural characteristics of Greenlanders, resulting in a high likelihood that Inuit parents would score poorly, which could lead to losing custody of their children. The institute cautioned that "the erroneous results of these tests could have profound and long-lasting effects on both the child and the parents." The Danish government had previously ignored such protests and criticisms, but since Trump's remarks, it has quickly changed its tone towards Greenland. Greenland and other polar territories were once colonies of Denmark, and Copenhagen still controls their foreign policy and security matters. On Sunday night, just before Trump's inauguration as the 47th President of the United States, Múte Egede, the Prime Minister of Greenland, emphasized in a live television program broadcast in both Denmark and Greenland that the people of this autonomous region are tired of being reminded to be grateful to Copenhagen as a "good colonizer."
