The US State Department announced that senior diplomats from the United States and China discussed contentious issues such as Taiwan, the South China Sea situation, Russia's war against Ukraine, and the trafficking of synthetic drugs to the US on Friday. According to the Associated Press, the meeting between Antony Blinken and Wang Yi, the foreign ministers of the US and China, took place on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, marking the highest level of diplomatic engagement since negotiations between Joe Biden and Xi Jinping last year in California. Simultaneously, Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the US State Department, stated that Blinken emphasized the importance of maintaining peace in the Taiwan Strait and expanding nascent efforts to combat synthetic drug trafficking. Blinken also expressed concerns regarding China's support for Russia's defense industries, which Washington views as aiding Moscow's military operations against Ukraine. The spokesperson added, "The two sides engaged in candid and constructive dialogue on a range of bilateral, regional, and global issues as part of ongoing efforts to maintain open lines of communication and responsibly manage competition in relations." According to the report, Blinken "stressed that the United States will defend the interests and values of the US and its allies" and discussions also covered the current situation in the Middle East and North Korea. Matthew Miller also mentioned that "both sides evaluated the maintenance of open communication lines between the US and China on a range of strategic issues, including consultations in key areas, as important." The Chinese foreign minister had previously called for "enhancing bilateral relations," emphasizing that cooperation between the two countries is no longer a choice but a "necessity" during a ceremony commemorating 45 years of diplomatic relations between China and the US. Earlier, Joe Biden, the US President, and Xi Jinping, the Chinese President, held a significant four-hour meeting on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in San Francisco, resulting in multiple agreements on strategic issues. According to the Associated Press, the leaders of the US and China had candid and constructive discussions on a wide range of bilateral and global issues, including potential areas of cooperation.
