Continued Clashes in Palestinian-Controlled Territories - 2002-04-07

Today marks the tenth day of Israel's invasion in the West Bank, with its forces still present in Palestinian cities and settlements. An Israeli army spokesperson stated that the troops are completing their operations in Jenin, but no orders for withdrawal have been issued. Gunfire continues to be heard in the city. Palestinians also report that Israeli forces have now entered more villages near Ramallah. Israeli soldiers remain stationed in Nablus. They continue to search homes for Palestinian militants, claiming to have arrested many. At least 200 Palestinians, including several armed men, have been hiding in a church in Bethlehem for the sixth day, and Israeli forces have surrounded the church. Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon stated he would try to end military operations in the West Bank as soon as possible. Israeli officials say Mr. Sharon made these remarks during a phone call with President Bush on Saturday. In this call, Mr. Bush urged Ariel Sharon to withdraw Israeli forces from Palestinian territories without delay. Israel has not indicated when it will end its invasion of cities and refugee camps that began ten days ago. Meanwhile, demonstrations in support of Palestinians continue in most European capitals. The European Union has issued a statement saying that Yasser Arafat, the Palestinian leader who is under siege by Israeli forces, remains the only legitimate representative of the Palestinians.
