Continued Israeli Airstrikes in Gaza; Israeli Army: Dozens of Hamas Militants Killed

Health officials in Gaza affiliated with Hamas announced on Wednesday, August 31, that Israeli airstrikes over the past 24 hours have left at least 50 dead. In response, the Israeli army stated that it targeted around 30 sites across Gaza, including tunnels, rocket launch sites, and a Hamas observation post. According to Reuters, the Israeli army's report also indicated that dozens of militants from this group, supported by the Islamic Republic, were killed. Additionally, Israeli forces seized military weapons including explosives, grenades, and automatic rifles. The Gaza Civil Emergency Service reported that the Israeli army attacked a school and a house near Gaza City, resulting in at least three deaths and 15 injuries. However, the Israeli army stated in a statement that it targeted Hamas militants operating in a command center located in an area previously used as a school. The statement reiterated Israel's accusation that Hamas conducts operations from within civilian facilities and areas. Previously, Hamas denied this despite evidence released by Israel. Reports indicate that the Israeli army also issued a new evacuation order for the densely populated area of "Deir al-Balah" in central Gaza, where hundreds of thousands of Palestinians displaced by the war are currently residing. Reuters quoted doctors and residents as saying that this evacuation order was quickly followed by tank fire, resulting in at least one death and several injuries. Meanwhile, the latest diplomatic efforts to halt this 10-month war are ongoing, but U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken concluded his ninth trip to the Middle East since the war began in Gaza without achieving a clear result regarding a ceasefire agreement. On Tuesday, August 30, before returning to Washington at Doha Airport, the capital of Qatar, he told reporters: "Israel has accepted the U.S. proposal for a ceasefire, and now time plays a decisive role in this matter." Militants from the extremist Islamist group Hamas attacked Israeli border areas on October 7 of last year, killing over 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking about 250 others as hostages to Gaza. Approximately 100 hostages were exchanged during a temporary ceasefire in late fall last year for Palestinian prisoners, and currently, about 100 hostages are held by Hamas, with uncertainty regarding how many are still alive. Hamas is designated as a terrorist organization by Israel, the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, and several other countries.
