Continued Pressure on Journalists in Iran; Omid Faraghat Sentenced to Six Months in Prison

Omid Faraghat, a journalist, has been sentenced to six months in prison on charges of 'propaganda against the regime' by the first branch of the Revolutionary Court of Karaj, presided over by Judge Asif al-Hosseini. According to the news agency of the Human Rights Activists in Iran, Hrana, this six-month prison sentence was recently issued and was communicated to him on Saturday, August 12. Hrana added that the notification of the sentence was done in the form of 'the accused copying the issued verdict.' The report states that judicial officials have 'without providing reasons' refrained from disclosing details such as the specifics of the charges against him and have also withheld the notification of the sentence in their electronic system. Court sessions regarding the charges against this political journalist were held on May 13 and August 7 of this year. Omid Faraghat was also sentenced in March of last year by Branch 7 of the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor's Office of Karaj to two years of prohibition from activity in cyberspace. The organization 'Defending the Flow of Free Information' reported on July 18 that the Islamic Republic has pursued legal and security actions against media, journalists, and media activists in 236 cases in the first six months of this year. This organization has linked the suppression of media and journalists to social events in Iran. According to this report, following four events in the past six months, including the attack on the anniversary ceremony of Qassem Soleimani, unprecedented military clashes between Iran and Israel, the publication of a BBC World Service report on how Nika Shakeri was killed, and the death of Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash, government mechanisms for suppressing journalists and media became active. Reporters Without Borders has assessed the Islamic Republic as 'one of the most repressive governments in the world' in terms of media freedom and has ranked Iran 177th out of 180 countries regarding freedom of expression. Based on this ranking, only three countries—Vietnam, China, and North Korea—are positioned lower than Iran.
