Continued Reciprocal Attacks Between Hezbollah and Israel; Residents of Northern Areas Demand Serious Action from the Israeli Government Against Hezbollah

Following extensive shelling of northern Israel by Hezbollah, Israeli jets targeted Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon; however, residents of northern areas urged the government to impose 'greater costs on Hezbollah and Lebanon.' The Israeli army announced on Tuesday, July 16, that its fighter jets retaliated against Hezbollah's attacks on northern regions by targeting buildings used by the Iran-backed group in southern Lebanon. These attacks came after Hezbollah claimed responsibility for firing over 20 rockets towards Western Galilee early on Tuesday afternoon. Hezbollah's attacks on northern Lebanon and targeting residential homes have led residents of northern areas to call for more action from the Israeli government and to impose 'greater costs on Hezbollah and Lebanon.' According to Israeli media, some residents of northern Israel defended an increased response to Hezbollah, stating that 'the time has come to change the equation, break free from fixed patterns, and impose costs on the country of Lebanon.' Shlomo Salem, a member of the Shlomi city council, told the media: 'Thousands of residents are under unprecedented attacks, children and adults are scared and desperate in shelters. We demand a serious and powerful attack that will shake all of Lebanon. The Prime Minister must respond in a way that leaves nothing of the Hezbollah group.' Hezbollah, which is backed by the Islamic Republic, began its attacks on Israeli targets at the border 'in support of the Palestinians' following Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7 and the start of the Gaza war, which has expanded in recent weeks. Western officials, especially from the United States, have repeatedly warned about the escalation of the war to the north and the involvement of Lebanon, potentially spreading it throughout the region. The Israeli Defense Minister had previously threatened that a serious escalation of the war with Hezbollah would involve all of Lebanon and take the country 'back to the Stone Age.'
