Continued Republican Criticism of the Pentagon; Suspend Arian Tabatabai's Security Clearance Immediately

Several Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives have called on the Department of Defense to clarify the role of its employee Arian Tabatabai and her connections with the Islamic Republic in a letter. Elise Stefanik, a Republican representative, announced on Friday, October 7, on her website that along with several other congressional lawmakers, she expressed outrage over Tabatabai's employment at the Department of Defense. In the letter to Lloyd Austin, the U.S. Secretary of Defense, they wrote: "It is shocking and unacceptable that the Department of Defense employs someone who has closely collaborated with the Iranian regime and has been part of an organization used by the Iranian regime to expand its influence during the JCPOA negotiations." The lawmakers in the letter indicated that the claims of a current Department of Defense employee collaborating with Tehran to promote their narratives reflect a clear failure of the Department of Defense to properly vet its employees. They demanded that Tabatabai's security clearance be suspended immediately and that the results of their investigations into this matter be fully disclosed to the American people. They also emphasized: "The Department of Defense must answer to the American people as to why they are employing an Iranian agent with taxpayer money who has worked to promote Tehran's malign narratives within the United States and legitimize Iran's nuclear program on the global stage." Some reports published in recent days have claimed that Arian Tabatabai, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict, was a founding member of the Iran Experts Initiative, which collaborated with the Islamic Republic to spread false narratives about Iran's nuclear program during negotiations with Western powers. However, the U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense stated on Friday, October 7, in the U.S. Senate that the Pentagon is "reviewing" Tabatabai's security clearance and access to highly classified information. Christopher Mayer added: "We received the joint letter from the House Armed Services Committee and the Subcommittee on Intelligence and Special Operations two days ago and are actively reviewing whether the laws and regulations were properly followed in granting Tabatabai's access to classified information." Meanwhile, Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, on Tuesday addressed media reports regarding the "influence of a network of Islamic Republic agents in Western political circles," stating that this pertains to a decade ago and that most of the individuals mentioned in the report no longer hold positions in the U.S. government. He noted that one of them, who currently works for the U.S. Department of Defense, is undergoing a full background check for security clearance. The House of Representatives has prohibited the use of the 2024 State Department budget to remove the IRGC from the terrorist list. The Deputy Pentagon Chief stated that Arian Tabatabai's security clearance is under review. Republicans have strongly criticized the Biden administration for its perceived leniency towards the Islamic Republic; Tabatabai's case is currently under investigation.
