Continued Russian Missile and Drone Attacks on Ukraine; Five Killed and Dozens Injured

Russian officials announced on Tuesday, January 2, following three consecutive days of airstrikes by the country on Ukraine, that a large number of missiles and drones were fired towards Kyiv, the capital, and Kharkiv in northeastern Ukraine. According to Ukrainian officials, at least five civilians were killed and dozens more injured in these attacks, causing extensive damage to both cities. Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, stated on Monday, January 1, that Ukraine's airstrike on the city of Belgorod in Russia 'will not go unpunished.' Reuters reported that Russian officials claimed 25 civilians were killed in that attack, with dozens more reported injured. The missile and drone attacks by Russia on Ukraine escalated from December 29 with the largest airstrike of the country in a war that has lasted nearly two years, resulting in at least 39 deaths in Ukraine. In response to these attacks, Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, stated in a message on Telegram: 'Russia will be held accountable for every life lost.' The Russian army still controls parts of Ukrainian territory in the east and south of the country, and the front lines have not changed significantly in recent months despite counterattacks by the Ukrainian army. Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, reported that gas pipelines in areas of the capital were damaged, and electricity and water were cut off in several parts of the city. Last winter, Russia also targeted Kyiv's energy network with missiles, causing frequent power outages and plunging millions into darkness. Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine's foreign minister, urged Western allies to deliver air defense systems, long-range missiles, and combat drones to the country as soon as possible. Meanwhile, General Valerii Zaluzhnyi, the commander of the Ukrainian army, stated that air defense, equipped with systems provided by Kyiv's Western allies, shot down all 10 Russian 'Kinzhal' missiles fired in the recent attack, as well as 59 out of 70 cruise missiles and all three Russian 'Kalibr' cruise missiles.
