Continued Russian Missile Attacks on Ukrainian Power Plants

Russia has inflicted serious damage on Ukraine's energy infrastructure with missile attacks on Saturday, April 27, targeting facilities in the western and central regions of the country. According to Reuters, these attacks, carried out with ballistic and cruise missiles, mark the fourth heavy assault by Russia on Ukraine's power generation facilities since March 23. The company 'DTEK', Ukraine's largest private electricity provider, stated: 'The enemy has once again extensively shelled Ukraine's energy facilities.' The company added that four out of its six thermal power plants were damaged during the nighttime attacks. Ukrainian officials reported that rescuers are working to extinguish fires caused by these attacks at several energy facilities in the western regions bordering Poland and Romania, both NATO member countries. These damages were reported as the commander of Ukraine's Air Force announced that the country's air defense had intercepted 21 out of 34 Russian missiles. The report noted that Ukraine did not disclose the names of any of the targeted facilities to prevent Russia from immediately assessing the extent of the damage. According to Ukrainian officials, one missile struck a hospital in the northeastern city of Kharkiv, where 60 patients were hospitalized, injuring one woman and damaging the hospital building as well as nearby water pipes and power lines. Ukrainian officials claim that the country has lost 80% of its thermal power generation and 35% of its hydroelectric capacity due to recent Russian attacks. They stated that although most of Ukraine's energy system is supplied by nuclear power, this lost capacity disrupts the balance of the power grid during a time when electricity consumption typically increases at the end of the year. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for more air defense supplies and faster delivery of equipment from Kyiv's allies. Meanwhile, an Ukrainian intelligence source told Reuters that Ukraine, which has been trying to gain an advantage in aerial combat with Russia using long-range drones in recent months, targeted two refineries in oil facilities in the Krasnodar region of Russia, about 150 kilometers from the Black Sea, during drone attacks on Friday night.
