Continued Russian Missile Attacks; Ukrainian Parliament Approves Resignation of Four Members of Zelensky's Cabinet

As Russian missile attacks on Ukraine continue, resulting in at least seven deaths, Ukraine's Foreign Minister has resigned. Ruslan Stefanchuk, the Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament, wrote on social media on Wednesday, September 4, that Dmytro Kuleba has submitted his resignation and the parliament will vote on it. Kuleba is one of the highest-ranking officials in the Ukrainian government resigning as part of a cabinet reshuffle. David Arakhamia, the leader of the parliamentary majority in Ukraine, stated on Tuesday that significant changes in the cabinet are expected this week. According to him, 'more than half of the cabinet members' of President Volodymyr Zelensky will be replaced. Among those who have resigned so far is Alexander Kamyshin, the Minister of Strategic Industries, who was responsible for weapon production in the country. Reuters reports that he is expected to take on another defensive role. More than 40 people have died and 200 have been injured due to Russian missile attacks on central Ukraine. The resignations in Zelensky's cabinet also include the Ministers of Justice and Environment. Another report indicates the resignation of two deputy prime ministers and the head of Ukraine's state property. On Wednesday, the Ukrainian parliament approved the resignations of four cabinet members, including the Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration, another deputy, as well as the Minister of Strategic Industries and the Minister of Environment. In the Wednesday session, the resignation of another deputy prime minister did not receive a positive vote, and the resignation of the head of state property was opposed by a narrow margin. Meanwhile, the session of the Ukrainian parliament ended without voting on the resignations of the Foreign Minister and the Minister of Justice. The resignations of these two ministers are set to be discussed in parliament on Thursday. Mr. Zelensky stated in his speech on Tuesday night that the upcoming autumn will be 'very important for Ukraine.' He added, 'To achieve this, we need to strengthen certain areas of the government.' The Ukrainian Foreign Minister had previously told CNN's Christiane Amanpour that it is expected that Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, will increase air attacks on Ukraine before winter begins. As Moscow's attacks on Ukraine continue, the spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry warned the West and Kyiv that Russia's response to a potential long-range attack by Ukraine on its territory would be immediate and very painful. Maria Zakharova emphasized on Wednesday that the Kremlin's response would be 'very painful.' This threat comes as the Ukrainian Air Force announced in a statement via Telegram that it had shot down seven cruise missiles and 22 drones during Russia's nighttime attack on the country. Ihor Klymenko, Ukraine's Interior Minister, also stated that Wednesday's Russian attack on the city of Lviv in western Ukraine killed seven people, including three children. The Ukrainian Prosecutor's Office announced that this missile attack resulted in 40 injuries and damaged residential buildings in the historic center of the city, as well as schools and medical facilities. The western city of Lviv has largely been spared from the worst fighting during the two and a half years of war, but officials stated that last week, Russian attacks targeted the city's energy infrastructure, causing outages. This attack occurred one day after a missile struck the central city of Poltava in one of the deadliest bombings of the Russian military invasion, which has entered its third year. Local officials have advised residents to remain indoors and in shelters while air raid sirens and air defenses are active.
