Continued Solitary Confinement; 'Case Fabrication' Against Mashallah Karami and Amir Hossein Koohkan

News sources report that 43 days after the arrest of Mashallah Karami, the father of executed protester Mohammad Mehdi Karami, and his lawyer, Amir Hossein Koohkan, they are in a state of 'indecision' and 'case fabrication'. Siamak Azemi, brother of Sepehr Azemi, one of the victims of the nationwide protests of 2021, wrote on the 'X' messaging platform that Mr. Karami and Koohkan are being held 'in solitary confinement in an eight-square-meter room' and that 'multiple cases' have been prepared against them. He added that the prosecutor of Karaj 'has announced that they must remain in solitary confinement until they confess'. Azemi also wrote that the Karami family has been 'threatened in such a way that they will not even come to their child's grave' and that even 'their distant relatives' are completely under the control of government repression forces. Additionally, a human rights activist group in Iran reported that Amir Hossein Koohkan remains in an uncertain state in the Karaj Intelligence Department detention center. Meanwhile, lawyer Sina Yousafi described Koohkan's condition in detention as 'very critical physically and mentally' and stated that he has 'decided to commit suicide under the torture of the Ministry of Intelligence'. Mashallah Karami was arrested on August 22 when intelligence agents stormed his home, confiscating electronic devices such as laptops and mobile phones belonging to the Karami family. Concurrently with the arrest of Mohammad Mehdi Karami's father, his lawyer, Amir Hossein Koohkan, was also arrested after being summoned to the Karaj Intelligence Department. Before his arrest, this lawyer stated in a video message that he had gone to the intelligence office following a 'certainly illegal' phone summons and that 'if he is arrested, it would also be illegal'. Several members of the families of victims seeking justice from the 2021 protests in Iran have been arrested, questioned, or threatened as the anniversary of Mahsa Amini's death approaches. Abram Paley, the U.S. Special Envoy for Iran, condemned the arrests and pressure on the families of victims of the Islamic Republic, calling it 'an obvious attempt to instill fear among dissenting Iranians'.
