Court Ruling for 51 Defendants in Controversial and Historic Rape Case of a Woman in France Announced

After three and a half months of trial, 51 individuals were found guilty of serially raping a woman in southern France. The court sentenced the primary defendant in this controversial case, which shocked the world, to the maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. Dominique Pleiko, a 72-year-old man who was previously the husband of Gisèle Pleiko, the victim in this case, was convicted of repeatedly drugging his wife for nearly a decade to facilitate her rape and inviting dozens of strangers to assault her. Roger Arata, the president of the criminal court in Vaucluse, southeastern France, stated in court on Thursday: "Mr. Pleiko, you have been found guilty of severe sexual assaults against Gisèle Pleiko." Following the announcement of the verdict, Pleiko's lawyer indicated that his client is considering an appeal. The prison sentence, determined by a panel of five judges, is exactly what prosecutors requested in their indictment against Mr. Pleiko. He was found guilty of all charges against him and will be registered on France's national sex offender registry. Regarding the other 50 defendants, the court convicted all of them of sexual assault, except for two who were found guilty of attempted sexual assault and two others who were convicted of sexual harassment. Prosecutors sought prison sentences ranging from 10 to 20 years for these individuals, aged between 27 and 74, none of whom were acquitted, and only for one person, due to what was described as "touching" the victim, did they request 4 years in prison. However, the court imposed lesser sentences for some of them than what the prosecutors had requested. Dominique Pleiko, the main defendant, admitted to the charges against him during the trial and apologized to his family. However, many of the defendants denied their charges, claiming they believed they were participating in a consensual sexual game. Gisèle, the victim of this case, who is also 72 years old, waived her right to anonymity during the trial and requested that horrific videos recorded by her former husband of the serial rapes against her be shown in court. She rejected any claims of awareness or consent regarding what had happened to her, stating that she hopes this will help other women speak out about the issue of rape. The release of images of the assaults by dozens of men against the French woman caused tension in the courtroom. As the court's ruling was read, a crowd gathered outside the courthouse erupted in cheers. This case has been closely followed by the media, including international outlets, and on Thursday, 180 media representatives, including 86 foreign media, were present for the coverage of the ruling session. One civil rights activist present at the courthouse said before the verdict was announced to AFP: "Rape against women affects the entire world, which is why the whole world is watching what is going to happen today."
