Crisis in Justin Trudeau's Government; Canada's Finance Minister Resigns

Chrystia Freeland, Canada's Finance Minister, has resigned from her position, intensifying the political crisis in the country, with the opposition party calling for Justin Trudeau's resignation as Prime Minister. In her resignation letter, published on social media on Monday evening, December 26, she referred to Trudeau's pressure for increased spending as 'a political trick.' She emphasized that Trudeau's approach could undermine Canada's ability to respond to Donald Trump's decision, the elected President of the United States, regarding the imposition of 25% tariffs. According to Reuters, Freeland's resignation, who was also the Deputy Prime Minister, dealt an unexpected blow to Trudeau's already unpopular government. Jagmeet Singh, leader of the opposition 'New Democrats,' told reporters, 'I urge Justin Trudeau to resign. He must go.' Singh, however, did not give a clear answer when asked if his party would support a vote of no confidence against Trudeau in Parliament, only stating, 'All options are on the table.' If opposition parties unite, they could vote no confidence against Trudeau; however, the Canadian Parliament will enter its year-end holiday on Tuesday, with its reopening scheduled for January 27. The Conservative Party, the main opposition to Trudeau's government, has not yet commented on this matter. However, on Monday evening, Pierre Poilievre, the leader of this party, stated that the government is getting out of control, saying, 'We cannot accept this kind of chaos, division, and weakness, especially when we are staring at the barrel of a 25% tariff from our largest trading partner.' Donald Trump, the elected President of the United States, threatened about three weeks ago to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Canada, as well as Mexico and China, on his first day in office. He has accused Canada and Mexico of allowing a flood of illegal immigrants and drugs to flow into the United States due to their lack of serious border control. Two days after these remarks, Justin Trudeau made an unexpected trip to Florida to meet with Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate. According to Reuters, Freeland's resignation, at the age of 56, represents one of the biggest crises Trudeau has faced since coming to power in November 2015. Polls indicate that Trudeau's Liberal Party is likely to lose in the upcoming elections. Members of Trudeau's party have expressed concerns for months regarding public dissatisfaction with rising prices and the loss of two seats in Parliament, referencing polling results. Freeland's resignation came just hours before the government was set to unveil its fall economic document to Parliament. This document is expected to indicate a budget deficit significantly higher than previously anticipated. Reports suggest that Canadian officials have stated this document will be published as planned.
