Criticism of Sexual Abuse by UN Peacekeepers Against Children at the Human Rights Council

On Thursday, March 14, the UN Human Rights Council addressed the issue of sexual abuse of children in peacekeeping missions and humanitarian operations. According to the UN Human Rights Council website, Mama Fatima Singateh, the organization's special rapporteur, expressed concern in a report regarding the sale, exploitation, and sexual abuse of children by UN personnel and peacekeeping forces, highlighting the continuation of this serious human rights violation and a fundamental failure in protecting children. She described this issue as 'a serious crime' against children, one of the most vulnerable groups, emphasizing that actions taken in recent years have been insufficient and that more fundamental steps must be taken to address this crisis. One of the key recommendations of this report is the establishment of an independent special court to investigate and prosecute crimes related to UN personnel. Additionally, if military forces commit these violations and their respective countries are unable or unwilling to enforce justice, this court could intervene. Ms. Singateh also stressed the need to strengthen reporting mechanisms concerning children, enhance coordination among international agencies, and implement preventive measures in local communities. She urged all entities involved in peacekeeping and humanitarian missions to adopt a more serious approach to protect children's rights and hold perpetrators of these crimes accountable. Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, also warned on Thursday that the progress made in recent decades regarding children's rights has stalled and, in some cases, is regressing. Mr. Turk noted that the Convention on the Rights of the Child is the most widely ratified human rights treaty globally, stating on social media platform 'X' that despite this legal progress, millions of children still lack access to food, clean water, education, and protection. He called on the international community to take immediate and effective actions to prevent the erosion of children's rights and to stop regression in the achievements made.
