Cyber Attack by Russian Military Intelligence on NATO and EU Members

Germany's domestic intelligence agency announced that a cyber group linked to the Russian military intelligence, known as Unit 29155, has launched a cyber attack against NATO and EU countries. The German intelligence agency warned on social media platform X on Monday, September 10, about the actions of the Russian group also referred to as YVAN-C 2589. Germany's concerns align with warnings from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, Cybersecurity Agency, and National Intelligence Agency, as well as other international partners regarding the expansion of Russian cyber activities. According to Reuters, since Russia's military invasion of Ukraine two and a half years ago, concerns in Europe about hackers and espionage for Russia have increased. Earlier this year, Berlin accused Russia of conducting cyber attacks against the ruling Social Democratic Party of Germany and companies in the logistics, defense, aerospace, and information technology sectors. The German intelligence agency stated that the group tasked by the Russian military intelligence aims to spy and sabotage by destroying websites and stealing their data. The Russian military intelligence agency, GRU, is accused of being behind the poisoning of Sergei Skripal, a former agent of this agency, and his daughter during their stay in the UK six years ago, after Skripal was arrested and labeled a traitor in Russia. The Biden administration imposed punitive measures against Russian interference in U.S. elections. The GRU is the foreign intelligence unit of the 'Main Intelligence Directorate' of the Russian army. In mid-May, Germany's Ministry of the Interior summoned the Russian embassy's chargé d'affaires in Berlin following cyber attacks by the Russian military intelligence against the ruling party and various sectors in Germany. Germany stated that the Russian military intelligence service had long exploited an unknown security flaw in Microsoft Outlook email. Additionally, the European Union warned Russia in mid-May that it would respond to cyber attacks carried out by Russia against countries like Poland, Lithuania, Slovakia, and Sweden 'with a full range of tools.' The recent statement from Germany's domestic intelligence agency regarding the continued attacks by the cyber group assigned by the Russian military intelligence against NATO and EU member countries comes as U.S. intelligence and security agencies have increasingly accused Russia of attempting to influence the upcoming U.S. elections through the dissemination of false information. The U.S. National Intelligence Director has warned since early spring this year about Russian activities alongside actions by China and the Islamic Republic of Iran regarding U.S. elections and its electoral campaigns. All three countries are accused of conducting cyber activities against the U.S. through cyber groups linked to their official military institutions. Last week, the Biden administration, in cooperation with the FBI, announced a series of measures to punish Russia in response to actions by Russian-linked agents to influence the U.S. presidential election. The U.S. Secretary of State last week announced three specific steps to combat Russia's covert influence in the upcoming U.S. elections in November, including through employees and activities of the Russian state news network, RT.
