Daei: I have been banned from transactions for a year and a half; a lawyer: The judiciary's action has no legal basis

Ali Daei, former captain of the Iranian national football team, announced in a video interview that he has been banned from transactions for a year and a half. A lawyer described this action by the Iranian judiciary as a "novelty" that "has no legal basis." Daei, a prominent figure in Iranian football whose support for nationwide protests following the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody has led to pressures on him and his family, stated that judicial authorities have prohibited him from conducting transactions. On Saturday, during a conversation with Adel Ferdowsipour and Pejman Jamshidi on the "Football 360" application program, he said: "Even though we have been banned from transactions for a year and a half, I am not banned from coaching." Daei's remarks have resonated on social media. He did not specify which authority imposed the transaction ban on him or when it started. Mohsen Barahani, a lawyer and dismissed university professor, reacted to this news on social media platform X, stating: "Transaction prohibition means that a citizen has no right to conduct any transactions regarding their assets, which is a novelty and has no legal basis." Barahani emphasized that "no authority can deprive individuals of their right to buy and sell" and that "individuals banned from transactions can still enter into contracts, and such transactions are valid." The legal advisory group Dadban also stressed that "no law in Iran recognizes transaction prohibition as a punishment, and this act does not even exist among supplementary and collateral punishments; even a court ruling prohibiting citizens from transactions is entirely a fraudulent and illegal action." Another part of the program that sparked a wave of comments on social media was the appearance of Daei's teenage daughter without compulsory hijab in front of the camera. Following the death of Mahsa Amini and the emergence of nationwide protests in Iran, the Islamic Republic's authorities have exerted pressures on several cultural and sports figures, including arrests, judicial cases, prison sentences, travel bans, and restrictions on certain social rights. Additionally, following Daei's support for the nationwide protests in Iran, his passport was confiscated, his restaurant and jewelry store were shut down, and a plane carrying his wife and daughter, Mona Farokhzad and Nora Daei, was unexpectedly returned from Dubai to Kish Island to prevent his family's exit from the country. After this action by the Iranian authorities, Daei sarcastically referred to the incident of the Revolutionary Guards shooting down the PS752 passenger plane, saying: "I thank God that their plane was not hit by enemy missiles."
