Damascus: 8 Syrian Soldiers Injured in Israeli Airstrike

The Syrian Ministry of Defense announced in a statement that 8 of its soldiers were injured following an Israeli airstrike on the outskirts of Damascus, the capital of Syria, late on Thursday, May 2. Israel has not claimed responsibility for the attack so far. Reuters, citing the Syrian Ministry of Defense statement published by the official news agency 'SANA', referred to this attack as 'the latest of its kind during the war in Gaza.' The Syrian Ministry of Defense stated that the Israeli attack from the Golan Heights targeted 'one of the sites near Damascus' and caused material damage, but did not provide further details. A Syrian security source told Reuters that the attack targeted a building operated by Syrian security forces. It was also noted that the attack site was in an area where Hezbollah and Iranian forces are stationed. However, this security source indicated that the targeted site was not operated by Iranian units or Hezbollah. Hezbollah and the Islamic Republic have been present in Syria since the onset of the civil war approximately 13 years ago to support Bashar al-Assad's regime. Meanwhile, Tehran has always claimed that its dispatched forces to Syria are 'military advisors.' According to Reuters, the Israeli army stated that it does not comment on reports from foreign media. The news agency reported that Israel has been attacking Iranian-related targets in Syria for years and has increased its operations in the country since the Hamas militants' attacks on October 7 of last year, which left 1,200 dead. Following Israeli attacks in Syria, several senior officials of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps have been killed.
