Danish Citizen Released from Iran Arrives in His Country

Thomas Kims, a Danish citizen who was released from prison in Iran on Friday, arrived in Denmark on Saturday, June 3. He expressed happiness about his release from prison and his return to his country to see his parents. After arriving in Denmark, Thomas Kims stated in an airport interview that he had traveled to Iran as a tourist but suddenly lost his freedom and had to adapt to his new circumstances to maintain his physical and mental health. According to Reuters, he mentioned that prison officials treated him like 'a guest' and that he had not been subjected to any physical torture, receiving food and drink, but his freedom had been taken away. The Danish Foreign Minister expressed happiness over the release of this Danish citizen on Friday and thanked Belgium and Oman for their roles in securing Thomas Kims' release. Two Iranian-Austrian citizens named Kamran Ghaderi and Masoud Mosahab, along with this Danish citizen, were released from the Islamic Republic's prison and left Iran following mediation by Belgium and Oman. The release of these three European citizens comes about three weeks after the release of two French citizens and a Franco-Irish citizen named Benjamin Brier and Bernard Filan. Additionally, last Friday, the governments of Iran and Belgium, with the mediation of the Sultanate of Oman, exchanged Assadollah Assadi, a diplomat convicted of involvement in a terrorist act, with Olivier Vandecasteele, a Belgian aid worker. Western countries have labeled the detention of their citizens by the Islamic Republic as 'political hostage-taking' and have repeatedly called on the Islamic Republic to end this 'oppressive' practice. However, the Islamic Republic continues to detain and imprison Western and dual-national citizens on charges such as 'espionage' and 'actions against national security' without providing any evidence or documentation.
