Darvishpour: Concern Raised Over Arrest of 'Girl of Enghelab Street' in Meeting with Swedish Officials

On Tuesday, January 23, a meeting took place between a delegation from the 'Society for the Defense of the Struggles of the People of Iran,' consisting of Mehrdad Darvishpour, a sociologist, and Maryam Ebrahimi and Agnes Yulin, the Middle East and North Africa section secretary and direct responsible for Iran at the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. According to Mr. Darvishpour, the 40-minute meeting addressed the need for a stronger response from Sweden and the European Union to the suppression of protests by the Iranian government. This political activist and university professor in Stockholm added that during the discussions, they emphasized, 'Although we do not agree with bringing the issue of Iran to the Security Council and oppose any groundwork for military attacks on Iran, this should not mean indifference to the suppression of the people by the government. Sweden can express its opposition to the suppression of protests and demonstrations more seriously by summoning the Iranian ambassador to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Additionally, the delegation called for following up on the fate of those arrested during these events and the immediate release of all of them and other political prisoners. They also stressed the importance of encouraging the European Union and the UN Human Rights Council to adopt a firmer stance in condemning the government's suppression of the people.'
