David Cameron: Maintaining Relations with the Islamic Republic is Essential and Designating the IRGC as Terrorist is Detrimental to Britain

David Cameron, the UK Foreign Secretary, stated on Tuesday during his appearance before the International Relations and Defense Committee of the House of Lords that maintaining political relations with the Islamic Republic is 'essential' and that listing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization would not be beneficial for Britain. According to Sky News, he commented on calls for the UK government to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization, saying that this is not necessary and that the current situation, which has placed it under sanctions, is a sufficiently strong position. Cameron told committee members: 'All the actions we need to take to pressure the Islamic Republic and ensure we can act against them where they operate illegally have been carried out through the sanctions we have strengthened.' The UK Foreign Secretary further emphasized, 'We have fully sanctioned the IRGC, and when I ask the police and intelligence agencies whether this additional step of labeling the IRGC as terrorist is necessary, the answer is no.' He stated that designating the IRGC as a terrorist organization would end diplomatic relations between London and Tehran, asserting that we can maintain this level of dialogue and that labeling the IRGC as terrorist not only does not strengthen our approach but, in many ways, weakens it. In late Farvardin, a cross-party coalition of UK parliamentarians warned in an open letter to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak that the IRGC has never posed a 'greater threat' to Britain and called for its designation as a terrorist organization. The US, UK, and Canada have imposed coordinated sanctions against the Islamic Republic. The European Parliament resolution: The IRGC and Hezbollah as a whole should be listed as 'terrorist organizations.' The White House: More sanctions against the Islamic Republic will be imposed under the National Security Supplemental Appropriations Act. A letter from 134 UK parliament members to Rishi Sunak: The IRGC should be recognized as a terrorist organization. Israel welcomed the EU's move to impose further sanctions against the IRGC and the Islamic Republic. Cameron urged Israel not to take retaliatory action against the Iranian government; sanctions against the Islamic Republic are increasing.
