Deadliest Accident in France in Three Decades Leaves 43 Dead

On Friday, a bus carrying elderly tourists collided with a truck, resulting in a fire and at least 43 passengers losing their lives. This is the deadliest traffic accident in France in the past three decades. Two occupants of the truck, including a young boy, were also killed, and eight others were injured. According to Reuters, the accident occurred on a sharp bend of a secondary road in wooded areas, 60 kilometers east of Bordeaux. Television reports show that both the bus and the timber truck caught fire. The bus was carrying 50 elderly tourists returning from a day trip to their village. According to police, in addition to the 41 bus passengers, the truck driver and a three-year-old boy accompanying him were killed. However, the bus driver was among those who managed to escape. He was able to exit through the front door of the bus. A spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior stated that investigations indicate that most of the deceased passengers were French and locals from the area. Manuel Valls, the Prime Minister of France, who visited the accident site, confirmed the number of casualties and stated, "The victims died in a fire that occurred due to the accident involving the heavy vehicle." Officials say the bus driver was able to open the front door, allowing eight people to escape before the fire spread.
