Deadly Explosion at Mosque in Homs Amid Escalating Tensions in Syria

Reports indicate that the explosion took place during Friday prayers, prompting security forces to cordon off the area and transport the injured to nearby hospitals. Syrian state media and medical sources initially reported the number of victims to be between three and eight dead and at least 18 to 21 injured, indicating a gradual increase in casualty figures in the hours following the incident. A security source told the Syrian state news agency that initial evidence suggests the explosion was caused by the placement of one or more explosive devices inside the mosque. The Ali ibn Abi Talib Mosque in Wadi al-Dahab is recognized as one of the religious centers of the Alawite community in Homs. Alawites are a religious minority in Syria, making up a significant portion of the country's population, which is predominantly Sunni Muslim. The targeting of an Alawite religious site has raised concerns about escalating sectarian tensions in Syria. As of the time of this report, no group has claimed responsibility for the explosion, but some reports citing local sources and social media suggest the involvement of extremist jihadist groups, such as ISIS affiliates or radical Sunni groups that have previously threatened Alawites. Syrian officials stated that security agencies are examining various scenarios, from a remotely controlled explosion to the possibility of a suicide attack. This attack occurs at a time when remnants of ISIS and other extremist groups remain active in parts of Syria following the collapse of their self-proclaimed caliphate in 2017, conducting sporadic operations against government forces, allied militias, and religious minorities. In recent months, attacks by ISIS and aligned groups have increased in various regions of Syria, including around Damascus and parts of the Badiyah, and the Damascus government, in collaboration with the international anti-ISIS coalition, has conducted broader operations to pursue the group's hidden cells. In this context, the United States has also initiated a series of operations aimed at eliminating ISIS positions in Syria in recent days.
