Death of a Young Man Following 'Mistaken' Entry of Israeli Soldiers into a Camp

The latest armed clash between the Israeli army and Palestinians in the West Bank resulted in the death of a Palestinian youth and injuries to ten others. Israeli soldiers engaged with youths throwing stones at them during an attack on the Qalandiya camp near Ramallah, the political center of the Palestinian Authority, on Monday evening, March 1. According to Israeli media citing the army, two Israeli soldiers 'lost' their way and mistakenly entered Qalandiya due to reliance on GPS, prompting the army to send forces to rescue them. The Israeli army claims that before sending reinforcements, Palestinians attacked the 'lost' soldiers' vehicle with Molotov cocktails, putting their lives in 'danger.' Following this incident, which lasted nearly two hours, the two soldiers were safely evacuated, but five other Israeli soldiers were injured by stones and Molotov cocktails. Israel states that it is always 'worried' about the repetition of incidents where its soldiers are killed by Palestinians in the West Bank over the past decade. Palestinian media report that 'Iyad Omar,' a 22-year-old Palestinian killed in the Qalandiya camp, was a media student at Al-Quds University. Following this recent clash, significant damage was left at the site. In the past five months, nearly 190 Palestinians have been killed by Israelis in Jerusalem and the West Bank; more than two-thirds of them were targeted for 'knife attacks' against Israelis. During the same period, Israel has lost 33 lives in what is termed the 'Knife Intifada.' Alongside ongoing unrest in the Gaza Strip and continued tensions in Jerusalem, Gaza has also witnessed protests in recent days. Thousands of Palestinians protested in Gaza City on Monday, March 1, demanding an investigation into the killing of Omar Zaid Al-Nayef. The body of Omar Zaid Al-Nayef, a Palestinian Front for the Liberation of Palestine activist and former security prisoner in Israeli jails, was discovered on Friday, February 26, in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. Jamil Hormuz, a senior official of the Palestinian Front in Gaza, stated to Palestinian media that the Israeli Mossad was responsible for Al-Nayef's murder. Israel has remained silent on this matter, and the Palestinian Authority has denied accusations of 'collaboration' with Israel in Al-Nayef's killing. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu harshly criticized his predecessor's decision to withdraw Israel from the Gaza Strip. According to the Ynet news website, Netanyahu on Monday, March 1, on the second anniversary of the death of former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, stated that the absence of a permanent Israeli military presence in Gaza has led to the 'strengthening of terrorism.' Eleven years ago, Sharon withdrew the Israeli army from Gaza after 38 years of occupation.
