Death of Eight Police Officers in Southeastern Turkey 'Due to PKK Bombing'

Reports from southeastern Turkey indicate the death of eight police officers and the injury of dozens following the explosion of a car bomb 'by the PKK group'. According to AFP on Friday, September 5, the explosion occurred near a police station in the city of Cizre, on the Turkey-Syria border, causing significant damage to the building. The same news agency reported that the bombing resulted in eight fatalities among police forces and 45 injuries. While no group has officially claimed responsibility for the bombing, the local Anadolu agency attributes it to the Kurdish militant group PKK. Since the unofficial end of the ceasefire between the PKK and the Turkish government a year ago, Turkish security forces and police have been targeted by such attacks almost weekly. In response, the Turkish army has repeatedly conducted military operations in urban areas of southeastern Turkey, which has the highest Kurdish population. Furthermore, the latest attack by Kurdish militants, should they claim responsibility, occurs two days after Turkey announced the start of 'Operation Euphrates Shield', sending tanks into Syrian territory. According to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the 'Euphrates Shield' operation aims to secure Turkey's borders, combat ISIS, and prevent Kurdish advances in northern Syria. Despite protests from the Assad government in Syria, the number and scale of Turkish forces in the country have increased in recent days, and it seems that the deployment of these forces is not yet complete. On Friday, as reported by AFP, more tanks from the Turkish army have entered Syrian territory to confront 'Islamic State forces'. In this context, the city of Karkamış on the Turkey-Syria border is being 'evacuated of civilians'. Ankara has initiated operations to clear Jarablus, Syria, of ISIS. Biden has urged Turkey to show patience regarding the Gulen case. Erdogan stated that Syrian rebels supported by Ankara have taken the city of Jarablus from ISIS control.
