Death of Lotfi's Mother, 'Symbol of Khavaran'

Forough Tajbakhsh, known as 'Lotfi's Mother', passed away on Sunday evening, February 10, in Tehran. She was the mother of Anoushiravan Lotfi, one of the political prisoners executed during what is referred to as the '1988 Massacre'. Tajbakhsh, who became a symbol of Khavaran, along with other mothers and family members of these prisoners, had been protesting since 1987 in front of the UN office in Tehran and holding annual gatherings at the nameless graves in Khavaran cemetery, striving to turn the case of these executions into a national and international issue. In an interview with Mansoureh Behkish, sister of two victims of these executions now residing in Ireland, we asked about the details of Tajbakhsh's passing, her prominence among the families of the victims, and the fate of the pursuit of the case known as the 1988 Massacre. Behkish expressed her shock at the news, stating that Tajbakhsh was one of the most influential mothers and families, not only because of her son but also due to her own impactful and courageous character in the justice-seeking movement. She emphasized that Tajbakhsh was a significant figure who actively participated in various gatherings and encouraged other families, regardless of their political affiliations. Behkish also noted that the pursuit of justice does not end with the passing of mothers, as their husbands, siblings, and children remain committed to the cause. The legacy of these mothers, who stood firm during difficult years, will continue to inspire future efforts for justice.
